Official Derby Rules

DERBY COMPETITION: One-day tournament, Saturday, June 12th, 2020. Official start at 7 a.m. Weigh-in closed at 3:30 p.m.


WEATHER: Fish at your own discretion and risk. If Derby is cancelled due to weather or for any other reason – NO make-up day, NO refunds.


BAIT, TACKLE, AND LINE: Live, artificial and natural bait permitted. Wire line allowed. No restrictions on line test. All fish must be caught on manual rod and reel (electric downriggers and kite rods permitted).


VESSEL CHECKOUT: Gentleman’s start. Fish from any inlet. Lines in at 7 a.m. NO competitive fishing before that time. Baitfish may be taken before official start.


OFFICIAL WEIGH-IN: Weigh-in begins at noon at Old Key Lime House face dock. Remove all hooks from fish to be weighed. Boat must have bow and stern line ready and outriggers in up position before approaching dock. Weigh-in ends at 3:30 p.m. Boats must be in line directly in front of Old Key Lime House dock and recognized by Derby Weigh-In Staff no later than 3:30. If in route, radio communication does not constitute being recognized – only visual recognition by Committee. Weigh Master may disqualify any fish for freshness and/or mutilation In case of a tie, the first fish weighed-in wins. After weigh-in, boats wishing to patronize the Old Key Lime House may tie up at dock immediately to the west of the Old Key Lime House. Only OKLH patrons may tie up at this dock!


ELIGIBLE FISH: Official Derby fish are Kingfish, Wahoo, and Dolphin. Largest fish to be determined by weight only. All fish will be returned to angler. All fish must be brought to dock by the boat that caught it and boat must bring fish to dock under its own power, with the exception of deep draft boats who may apply to the Committee for an exemption before the Derby competition.


RADIO COMMUNICATION: VHF Channel 72 (if 72 becomes unavailable use Channel 70 as an alternate).


SAFETY: Each Captain and all anglers accept responsibility and liability for their own safety and the safety of their boat.


The Derby will be cancelled if NOAA issues a Small Craft Advisory for the coastal waters from Jupiter Inlet to Deerfield Beach. In the event of other unusually bad or unsafe sea conditions, the Derby Committee will decide if fishing should be cancelled.

If fishing is to be cancelled, a message will be posted on the Derby website by 5:00 a.m. and the cancellation will be broadcast on Channel 72 starting at 5:00 a.m. and repeated every 15 minutes until 7 a.m. There will be no make-up date if fishing is cancelled.

All prizes will be awarded at the Awards Party and Barbecue on Sunday, June 13th, at Lantana Recreation Center 418 S. Dixie Highway Lantana;.  If fishing is cancelled, winners will be drawn at random from all boat entries in the following order... 


* Largest overall fish

* There will be no Monster bonus if fishing is cancelled.
